It is a place for excursions, berry picking, hunting, walking your dog, a place to enjoy nature.
It is a workplace, a source of income and an investment in the future.
It is a treasure trove of diversity.
It produces sustainable solutions for our everyday lives.
It is the forest.
Forest Finland tells about all this
Forest Finland is the joint communication project of the Finnish forest sector, launched in May 2020. The campaign will awaken and raise peoples’ interest and encourage discussion about the forests’ role in everything we have in Finland.
Forest Finland talks about the sustainability of the use of the northern forests and about the solutions the sustainable use of them offers. The forest will be seen on TV and heard on the radio, in outdoor advertising and in social media.
Forest Finland updates our perception of modern forestry. It presents products one could not imagine being made using wood:
- Wash basins and sinks
- Plastic salad boxes
- Mustard and ketchup
- Toothpaste and medicine tablets
- Renewable cast material replacing gypsum
Outdoor advertising and social media reveal surprising facts about Finland’s forests and Finnish forestry:
- In Finland, 150,000,000 trees are planted each year
- Finns live on average 700 meters from the nearest forest
- 75 percent of Finland’s area consists of forest
- More than half of Europe’s protected forests are in Finland
- There is over 50% more timber than 50 years ago in Finland’s forests
- After a tree is felled, four new trees are planted in Finland
The information is explained on the Forest Finland website. For more questions, additional information and sources can be found in the articles on the website. You can also familiarize yourself with the forest.fi website Q & A page.
Participating in combating climate change
Forest Finland aims to surprise, awaken interest in the forest and encourage us to discuss sustainable use of the forest. One concrete element of the campaign is a seed disc. Tens of thousands of discs will be distributed throughout Finland during the summer of 2020.
The disc contains six pine seeds. It also serves as a planting base for the seeds. It gives each of us the opportunity to participate in climate work. A single tree, while growing from newly planted to a fully grown tree, binds as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as an ordinary family car emits when driving a 5,000 km distance.
Everyone can participate. The seed disc gives you a way to start a discussion on the importance of forests. You can share the information in your own organization or on social media, e.g. by sharing pictures you have taken of the forest or by highlighting solutions that the forest produces for all of us.
Funders of Forest Finland
The project is funded by several actors of the forest sector, such as the Finnish Forest Foundation, the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, Metsähallitus (State forest agency), The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners MTK, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Finnish Forest Centre, the Wood Processing Engineers and the Metsämiesten Säätiö Foundation. In addition, The Paper Workers’ Union and the Industrial Union of Finland have also participated in the planning of the campaign. The project is led by the Finnish Forest Association.
